Pesamuan studio in Bali, Indonesia specializes in the design and production of  handmade , hand painted or relief ceramics for architecture, interior design and the exterior landscape. The art and design is directed by Philip Lakeman and Graham Oldroyd, two well respected Australian Artists both who have more than 30 years experience in creating ceramic. Both artists are active international exhibitors and are represented in major museum collections around the world.

Currently the  Bali studio employee’s 35 people and each piece is hand crafted using a unique and contemporary approach to ceramic handmade techniques and technology.

Pesamuan produces an ever expanding range of standard handmade tile, furniture, homeware, lighting, interior and landscape products. The studio can also be commissioned to create unique ‘one – off’ designs as ceramic schemes for hotel projects or public spaces.

All our production uses a unique process of ceramic manufacture which was developed and refined by Graham and Philip to utilize hand production techniques. It is a ceramic castable refractory which allows the production of large handmade sections of ceramic. This ceramic technology is unique to Pesamuan and allows us to create architectural scaled murals for public or corporate spaces.

The main production at Pesamuan is a collection of handmade relief tiles to complement stone installations. These relief tiles are produced in a range of deco sizes, borders, frieze and architectural sizes. Each tile is unique as they are also individually hand glazed to produce a subtle range of tonality to the glaze colours.

Many of the Pesamuan tile designs reference historical styles in ceramic. These ranges from the use of ancient production techniques such as sand-casting, the colourfull glaze technology of the Middle and Far East, and  modern hand crafted techniques including traditional Indonesian design concepts. Many of our relief tiles are also relevant to the contemporary Islamic world and Graham has studied Islamic Glaze techniques  and  other Arab ceramic traditions.

The glaze palette used in the studio ranges from dry low sheen relief surfaces intended to co ordinate with stone installations to a full range of high gloss glaze colours . Alongside the relief tile production, the studio also produces hand painted tile, table and homeware items.

Pesamuan is also unique in its ability to create hand painted ceramic tabletops which can be custom designed for hotel and restaurant interiors. These large one section tabletops form part of the ‘function art’ hand produced at the studio. The tabletop is not only strong and durable in both indoor/outdoor situations but as the hand painted surfaces are themed they become the focal artwork for the interior as well.
